Master Cut EDM, offers ultra-high-precision electrical wire discharge machining with accuracy to +/- .0001″, 4-axis, high taper angles and automatic wire threading capabilities.
When our oil and gas client required splined sleeves for use in a torque transfer system, we suggested our Makino DUO 43 and Fanuc wire EDM machines, which offer high wire tension technology that allows us to provide better shape accuracy, especially in corner geometry. The Makino DUO 43 also helps reduce cycle times in rough cutting, without sacrificing a bit of either accuracy or finish.
As a result, Master Cut EDM was able to cut the internal splines, and do the rough and skim cuts, in 32 hours per each of the 23 parts.
4130 steel was used because it offers excellent fusion weldability and can be further hardened with heat treatment.
The part met tight tolerances of +.0005/-.0000 and passed the Go and No-Go gage tests.
Master Cut EDM produced 23 of the 75 lb parts in 10 days for delivery to Louisiana.
