Master Cut EDM, which is known for its ability to use wire electrical discharge machining on prototypes and one-offs, handles low-volume production for the aerospace, marine, automotive and appliance industries.

Our precision Makino U86 wire EDM machine can handle fully submerged parts up to 50″x36″x20″ but can take on even larger sizes if they don’t need to be fully submerged.

For this project, we wire cut a tapered coupling that would connect the propeller shaft to a 12,000 HP marine diesel engine. Because the part would be subject to extreme loads and stresses, it was produced in forged steel, which was selected for its uniform composition and structure, strength and reliability.

We used wire EDM on our state-of-the-art Makino U86 wire EDM, ensuring the part met extremely tight tolerances of +/-.0005. Master Cut EDM performed in process testing and inspection, and verified specifications with certified gage blocks prior to additional inspections by both the marine customer and the U.S. Navy.

We were able to precision machine each of the three, 3,000 lb., forged steel, tapered couplings in 13 days for delivery to Virginia.

We’ve included additional information regarding this wire electrical discharge machined project in the chart below and look forward to discussing how Master Cut EDM can meet your needs.
